Bate Commons, located at the North Carolina History Center adjacent to the Riverwalk

Bate Commons

Bate Commons, just outside Mattock Hall overlooking the Trent River, was named to honor Harold H. Bate.  Mr. Bate was a philanthropist, investor and retired lumber executive.  Through his generosity, the Harold H. Bate Foundation has been funded by his estate with the mission to offer financial support to the communities of Craven, Pamlico and Jones County and East Carolina University.

Bate Commons is mostly used for special events.  Adjacent to Mattocks Hall, this outside venue offers a stunning view of the North Carolina History Center’s natural wetland gardens and the Trent River.
