NEW BERN, NC – Sept. 23, 2017
The sights and sounds of the Civil War will come to life during Tryon Palace’s Civil War Weekend, Sept. 23-24 at the New Bern Academy Museum.
At the New Bern Academy Museum, located on the corner of New and Hancock streets, visitors can interact with Civil War reenactors from the North Carolina 7th regiment of the Confederate States Army and the Union Army’s 35th regiment of the United States Colored Troops. Visitors can watch artillery and regiment drills, learn about Civil War-era medical tools and learn about the war’s impact on free and enslaved people living in eastern North Carolina.
“It’s important to us to present the many social and political sides of the Civil War and we are pleased to give our guests the unique opportunity to visit with reenactors representing Union and Confederate soldiers,” said Amber Satterthwaite, Tryon Palace Director of Education. “By observing life in camp and watching drills and medical demonstrations, visitors will gain knowledge of the challenges that soldiers, civilians and enslaved communities faced during this tumultuous chapter of our nation’s history.”
Civil War Weekend activities are scheduled at the New Bern Academy Museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s events will culminate with a canon firing on the South Lawn of the Governor’s Palace at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Also, visitors can discover New Bern’s Civil War history through exhibits inside the New Bern Academy Museum, open to the public 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
For even more Civil War history, visitors can travel to the New Bern Battlefield Park, which is the site of the 1862 Battle of New Bern.
Admission to Civil War Weekend activities at the New Bern Academy Museum and Tryon Palace grounds are free.
