Life on the Lesser Stairs

Weekly on Thursdays at 4:15 PM

In the 18th century, “lesser stair case” was an architectural label for a small and less ornate staircase in a large dwelling, compared to a “best stair case” designed to impress visitors. But lesser also referred to the importance, and to the contemporary value placed on the people assigned to use them. These were the stairs used by waged and enslaved domestic laborers on which a large household depended.

This behind-the-scenes tour explores the experiences of the men, women, and children whose toil in the Palace, Stables, and Kitchen Office enabled the private and public functions of Tryon Palace, New Bern’s first permanent capitol. Their stories, their work, and the true value of their contributions to history are brought to the forefront, offering a more complete understanding of this iconic site.
