“Getting the Dirt on Soils”

Our 2019 garden lecture series kicks off, Saturday, Jan 12, with Dr. Diana Rashash presenting “Getting the Dirt on Soils.” Dr. Rashash is the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Area Specialized Agent for Water Quality and Waste Management based out of Onslow County.

“Getting the Dirt on Soils” will help both homeowners and landscape professionals better understand the soil beneath them. 

The presentation will include:

  • Your soil has a name!
  • Soil attributes
    • Soil composition
    • Soil texture
    • Soil structure
  • Soil forming factors
  • Soil color & what it tells us - and how it impacts landscape options
  • Soil sampling and understanding the NCDA&CS soil analysis report
  • Amending soil
  • Weather permitting – time to go out and auger some holes!

This lecture is free and begins at 10 a.m. in Cullman Performance Hall at the North Carolina History Center.
