Civil War Weekend

Saturday, March 3, 2018 - 10:00am to Sunday, March 4, 2018 - 5:00pm

The sights and sounds of the Civil War come to life during Tryon Palace Civil War Weekend on the grounds of the historic New Bern Academy. This event features an encampment of 35th Regiment of the United States Colored Troops, our state’s first regiment of African American Union soldiers. Visitors will also meet the Sisters of Mercy, a convent of Roman Catholic nuns who worked at the hospital that incorporated the New Bern Academy during the Civil War. While Unionists, the Sisters provided care to soldiers fighting for both the North and South.

Visitors can watch regiment drills, learn about Civil War-era medical treatments, and explore the war’s impact on free and enslaved people living in eastern North Carolina.

Also, discover New Bern’s Civil War history through exhibits inside the New Bern Academy Museum, which will open to the public from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

For Tryon Palace One Day Pass holders, the story will continue in the John Wright Stanly House where the Sisters of Mercy lived. Tours of the house will focus on the 1860s period, and ticket holders will meet one of the Sisters in residence.

For even more Civil War history, visitors can travel to the New Bern Battlefield Park, which is the site of the 1862 Battle of New Bern.
