USCT Reenactment Troupe is Giving Away Holiday Meals to the Community

Tryon Palace’s 35th Regiment United States Colored Troops (USCT) Interpretive Reenactment Group is hosting a community event just in time for the Thanksgiving Holiday on Saturday, November 21st. The USCT group will have a historical encampment set up on the grounds of the New Bern Academy, located at 508 New Street.

During the reenactment, the USCT members will also be giving out 100 meals to families within the community. These meals will be given out on a first come, first served basis with vouchers handed out upon arrival.

Craig Allen, USCT member and organizer of this event says, “The USCT is a group of men that love history and appreciate every opportunity to tell the story of the African American soldiers and their contribution to winning the war against the South. So, we put our two passions together – community and history – to come up with the idea of telling our story while meeting a need within our community with the food giveaway.”

This event was organized by the USCT Group to build community among New Bern residents by supporting those who are in need. In addition, the event sustains Tryon Palace's mission to connect all generations with North Carolina's very important history.

Bill McCrea, Tryon Palace Executive Director says, “The men who serve the State as members of the 35th USCT also serve this community. Their generosity in helping those in need during the Thanksgiving holiday is a lesson for all of us.

The encampment and food giveaway will begin at 9 AM on Saturday the 21st and will last until 4 PM. Meal bags will be given out to families while supplies last. The members of the USCT are funding the event, however, should you wish to contribute to this worthy event, a complete meal can be sponsored for $25 and donations of any amount are appreciated.

For donations and interest in getting involved, please contact Sharon Bryant, Tryon Palace African American Outreach Coordinator at sharon.bryant@ncdcr.gov or 252-639-3592.
