NEW BERN, NC – Oct. 11, 2017

Tryon Palace will hold a presentation honoring longtime New Bern physician, Dr. Sydney Barnwell, at the North Carolina History Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11.

Dr. Barnwell will be recognized for his lifelong efforts toward improving healthcare in eastern North Carolina and for his continuing commitment and leadership in addressing social issues affecting New Bern, Craven County and the State of North Carolina. The tribute will include a media presentation reflecting on Dr. Barnwell’s 50-year medical career in New Bern and brief presentations by his family, the medical community and the city. A graduate of Howard University and the Howard University Medical School, Dr. Barnwell was the first African American to practice surgery in eastern North Carolina. He practiced surgery in New Bern for 20 years before becoming Medical Director of the Craven County Health Department. As Health Department Medical Director, Dr. Barnwell instituted a prostate cancer prevention and detection program that resulted in a 50% decrease in the mortality rate of African American men with prostate cancer in Craven, Jones and Pamlico Counties.

Retiring from the Health Department in 2015, Dr. Barnwell continues to engage in community affairs and is an active member of several business and civic organizations.  He is the recipient of numerous distinguished awards, including the NC Citizen of the Year Award and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
