Behind-the-Scenes Tours

Ever wonder where and how Tryon Palace makes period clothing for its historical interpreters? Curious about how Tryon Palace's artifacts are preserved? Want to explore Tryon Palace’s 16 acres of gardens and see how palace staff and volunteers maintain them? Tryon Palace staff in the costume shop, conservation lab and gardens lead tours that provide an inside perspective on the day-to-day inner workings of life at the palace.

Costume Shop Tours

Tours of the costume shop will include historical accounts of the c. 1809 Jones House, which, among other things, was used as a prison during the Civil War, and a brief tour of the home’s exterior. 

Inside the Jones House, the tour will visit the costume racks on the first floor, where all manner of period dresses and clothes hang. The costumer will discuss the research techniques used to ensure the costumes are produced using historically accurate techniques and fabrics. Also, observe the costume team at work tailoring, mending, and creating costumes to be featured in events at Tryon Palace throughout the year. 

Conservation Lab

Ever wondered how to care for antique furniture, metals or other objects? Take a behind-the-scenes tour of Tryon Palace’s Conservation Lab, where you will learn and see how the conservation staff care for and prepare our artifacts for exhibits, and the enjoyment of generations to come. 

Garden Tours

During tours of the palace gardens, visitors will discover what is in bloom this spring, learn about specific plants and design techniques, see the vegetables served on the governor’s table this season, and take a behind-the-scenes peek into the nursery yard.

Tours also include information on the Waystation cistern project, garden weddings, privy and parterre gardens, and the use of produce in the kitchen garden. Behind-the-scenes garden tours include access to all gardens, including the Green, Latham, Wilderness, Kellenberger, and Kitchen gardens. 

Museum Technology - Currently not available.
