The African-American and Civil War Programs Committee, one of several sub-committees of the New Bern 300th Anniversary Committee, is partnering with the Tryon Palace Commission to sponsor a Voyage of Discovery to Ghana, West Africa on November 1 thru 9, 2010. The tour is a sanctioned event of New Bern’s 300th Anniversary celebration. The trip is designed to explore and discover the various African influences on our culture and customs that endure even today. A large percentage of enslaved people, who populated the southeastern states, came from Central West Africa, and Ghana is representative of that culture.
A unique feature of the trip is to include ten local high school and first year community college students and provide travel scholarships to cover half the $3,200 cost for the trip. If you would like to help sponsor a student, please make checks payable to Tryon Palace Commission and indicate on the memo line that the contribution is for the Voyage of Discovery to Ghana. Forward your check to Kay Williams, P.O. Box 1007, New Bern, NC 28562. If you are interested in accompanying us on the trip, contact Fern D. Cotton at 252-638-8847 or by e-mail at fdcotton@suddenlink.net. |
