This Tryon Palace collection features a range of English and American silver.
The examples of New Bern and North Carolina silver are of special interest. Representative pieces include both flatware and hollowware. On display throughout the Palace, the John Wright Stanly house and the Dixon House are silver candlesticks and candelabra, tea sets, cake baskets, cruet sets and sweetmeat stands.
Among the many items in the silver collection whose ownership has been traced back to colonial New Bern are a punch ladle owned by Francis Hawks, son of Palace architect John Hawks, and a large serving tray owned by prominent resident Samuel Cornell. A kettle-on-stand once owned by North Carolina politician Richard Dobbs Spaight and which may have been part of the Palace’s original furnishings is on display in the Palace Housekeeper’s Room.
