  • LIBERTY, JUSTICE FOR ALL: “BLACK VOICES FROM THE PAST”

    NEW BERN, NC--- An exciting theatrical production entitled, “Black Voices from the Past” will be performed by dramatic arts students in the ECU Thespians program taught by Dr. Watson. The play, written by Dr. Watson, will take place in the Tryon Palace auditorium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 18. more

    NEW BERN, NC --- President’s Day may have come and gone, but George Washington’s Birthday isn’t until February 22 and Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens is celebrating the occasion.  In honor of the birthday of our nation’s first president, Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens is holding “The Palace, by George!”  For the weekend of February 20, 21, and 22, special events at the Palace will celebrate George Washington and the years of early statehood.

  • A Regency Twelfth Night Celebration To the Old Year Adieu, Great Joy to the New
    Wednesday, January 6
    NEW BERN --- Hundreds of years ago on twelfth night in England, revelers gathered in orchards where they sang to apple trees, drank to their health, poured hot cider over the trees’ roots and left cider-soaked bread in tree branches to feed the birds. Afterwards, they scared away evil spirits with a great shout and the firing of guns. more

    NEW BERN --- Following Reconstruction, whites in the South attempted to “reclaim” the land for themselves. Part of that “redemption” included a reign of terror that involved the destruction of African American property and the murder of African American men. more

  • Garden Lecture
    “Kermit Was Wrong – It IS Easy to be Green (at least in the garden)” with Felder Rushing
    NEW BERN --- Felder Rushing, the Gardening Guru, will explain how historic gardening techniques that made a lot of sense back then, relate to modern-day gardening. Then he’ll add some fun new “green” additions for the twenty-first century. This free lecture takes place on Saturday, January 23 at 10 a.m. in the Tryon Palace visitor center auditorium on the corner of Pollock and George street. more

  • New Bern the Revolutionary Town: Marching to the Music of the Revolution
    Sunday, January 24 ~ 3 p.m. ~ FREE!
    (NEW BERN --- Musicians were an important part of the 18th-century military. Fifes and drums played from sunrise to sunset, and served as a primary mode of communication from commander to troops during battle. Tryon Palace has undertaken the exciting task of recreating a colonial fife and drum corps, which plays at numerous events throughout the year in New Bern and beyond. Come learn more about the music of the 18th century military, and experience it for yourself in this educational concert. Location: Tryon Palace Visitor Center Auditorium. more

  • Making History for All People
    NEW BERN, NC --- Developing in historic New Bern (NC), the North Carolina History Education Center is joining a town full of notable buildings and landmarks.  The burgeoning construction on the waterfront is the next giant step for Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens in its mission to teach North Carolina history.  The final segment of the project is scheduled for completion in mid-2010 during New Bern’s 300th anniversary. more

  • NEW BERN ACADEMY TAKES A RECESS
    NEW BERN, NC --- The New Bern Academy Museum will be closed through February 2010. As part of the transition toward the completion of the North Carolina History Education Center, Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens has closed the New Bern Academy. This closure will allow for artifacts to be removed and replaced, and exhibits to be reworked. The anticipated reopening date is March 1, 2010. more
