MUSEUM SHOP RETAIL SHOP ASSOCIATE
TRYON PALACE HISTORIC SITES AND GARDENS
VOLUNTEERS WANTED
Shop Associates work in either of the two museum shops associated with the site. The shops are located in a historic house or located by the Stable Office in the Gardens area, where some outside work will be required. They handle cash and operate a computerized inventory POS system. Daily positive interactions with visitors, school groups, and staff is expected. Knowledge of NC history, gardening, and customer service techniques to enhance the retail experience are strongly encouraged. Local knowledge of New Bern attractions and familiarity with our tours is also essential.
Expectations for Shop Associates:
Volunteers are expected to work at least 2 weekends a month and possible holiday and other peak attendance times. Must be able to work independently. Need to be physically fit and able to stand for several hours at a time, plus be able to lift items to assist with receiving merchandise and inventory. Training and appropriate training materials will be provided. Training is on going throughout the year. Flexibility in schedule is strongly needed to adjust to the varying tour schedules monthly.
Shop Associates receive up to 25% discount in the shops. They can also be eligible for complimentary tickets.

MUSEUM GUIDE
These openings are full-time temporary positions with the State of
North Carolina.
Description of Work
POSITIONS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CONDUCTING A WIDE VARIETY OF FRONT-LINE INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMMING AND ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING COSTUMED FIRST AND THIRD PERSON INTERPRETATION AND CRAFT AND TRADE DEMONSTRATIONS. THE EMPLOYEES WILL WORK IN MULTIPLE HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND SPACES AND WILL BE ABLE TO SHIFT SEAMLESSLY BETWEEN INTERPRETING DIFFERENT HISTORICAL TIME PERIODS. POSITIONS WILL SERVE AS TEAM LEADERS FOR PART-TIME INTERPRETIVE STAFF AND WILL OVERSEE GROUP ROTATION & CONDUCT SCHOOL PROGRAMMING. THESE POSITIONS WILL SERVE AS CUSTOMER SERVICE RESOURCE PEOPLE FOR OTHER STAFF MEMBERS. THEY WILL ASSIST IN PREPARATION, PROGRAMMING, AND CLEAN-UP OF SPECIAL EVENT PROGRAMMING. THESE POSITIONS WILL HAVE A MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY OR TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY WORKWEEK. ADDITIONAL WEEKEND & HOLIDAY WORK IS REQUIRED.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
EMPLOYEES MUST BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE TO A VARIETY OF AUDIENCES, AND BE DEDICATED TO GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE.MUST POSSESS KNOWLEDGE OF
NORTH CAROLINA
HISTORY & USE BASIC RESEARCH SKILLS. MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF OR WILLINGNESS TO LEARN 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY CRAFTS AND TRADES. SHOULD HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF OR WILLINGNESS TO LEARN FIRST-PERSON INTERPRETATION AND THEATRICAL SKILLS. MUST BE ABLE TO LIFT 50 POUNDS AND WORK IN UNHEATED, UNAIRCONDITIONED SPACES.
Training and Experience Requirements
GRADUATION FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND TWO YEARS OF INTERPRETIVE EXPERIENCE IN A MUSEUM OR HISTORIC SITE SETTING; OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE.
