Description of Work
POSITION IS AT TRYON PALACE. THE POSITION WILL HAVE A TUESDAY THROUGH
SATURDAY WORKWEEK. ADDITIONAL WEEKEND & HOLIDAY WORK IS REQUIRED.
POSITION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CONDUCTING AND RESEARCHING A WIDE VARIETY
OF FRONT-LINE INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMMING AND ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING
COSTUMED FIRST AND THIRD PERSON INTERPRETATION, AND CRAFT AND TRADE
DEMONSTRATIONS. THE POSITION WILL WORK IN MULTIPLE HISTORIC BUILDINGS
AND SPACES AND WILL BE ABLE TO SHIFT SEAMLESSLY BETWEEN INTERPRETING
DIFFERENT HISTORICAL TIME PERIODS. POSITION WILL SERVE AS A TEAM AND
BUILDING LEADER FOR PART-TIME INTERPRETIVE STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS AND
WILL OVERSEE GROUP ROTATION & CONDUCT SCHOOL PROGRAMMING. THIS
POSITION WILL SERVE AS A CUSTOMER SERVICE RESOURCE PERSON FOR OTHER
STAFF MEMBERS. THE EMPLOYEE WILL ASSIST IN PREPARATION, PROGRAMMING,
AND CLEAN-UP OF SPECIAL EVENT PROGRAMMING.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
MUST BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE TO A VARIETY OF AUDIENCES, AND BE
DEDICATED TO GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. MUST POSSESS KNOWLEDGE OF NORTH
CAROLINA HISTORY & USE BASIC RESEARCH SKILLS. MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF
OR WILLINGNESS TO LEARN 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY CRAFTS AND TRADES.
SHOULD HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF OR WILLINGNESS TO LEARN FIRST-PERSON
INTERPRETATION AND THEATRICAL SKILLS. MUST BE ABLE TO LIFT 50 LBS.
OCCASIONALLY AND UP TO 20 LBS ON A REGULAR BASIS AND WORK IN UNHEATED,
UNAIRCONDITIONED SPACES.

Training and Experience Requirements
GRADUATION FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND TWO YEARS EXPERIENCE AS A MUSEUM GUIDE
OR DEVELOPING MUSEUM TOURS. MANAGEMENT PREFERS ADVANCED EDUCATION
DEGREE AND A COMBINATION OF TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE IN DRAMA, FIRST
PERSON INTERPRETATION, COSTUMED INTERPRETATION, AND/OR HISTORIC CRAFTS
AND TRADES. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited
institutions.
