Duffy Exhibit Gallery

Explore the endless riches of North Carolina’s history through the rotating exhibits in the Duffy Gallery. Each exhibition highlights different aspects of our state’s history and various pieces from Tryon Palace’s rich collection.

Connecting through Collecting: The Tryon Palace Collection ~ Recent Acquisitions, opens Friday, October 28, in the Duffy Gallery of the North Carolina History Center at Tryon Palace. The new exhibition features some highlights of the Tryon Palace collection that have never before been on public view and promises unexpected surprises that will shed new light on how we make connections to the past through the things we collect, preserve and interpret. The exhibit includes objects, both large and small, elegant and average, that open new windows onto some aspect of the past – some exploit, character or story. Featuring silver, ceramics, paintings, prints, and architectural elements in the Tryon Palace Collection, the exhibition showcases objects that represent the wide range of materials – from the magnificent to the mundane – that are critical to telling the stories of North Carolinians in the distant and not-so-distant past. Highlights include a rare silver spoon fashioned by one of North Carolina’s earliest silversmiths; a 17th-century oil portrait of William, 1st Earl of Craven and namesake of Craven County; important examples of early North Carolina furniture; and a magnificent neoclassical sugar urn by New Bern silversmith Freeman Woods. The exhibition is included with regular admission to Tryon Palace, or may be attended separately for an admission of $6 for adults, $3 for children. Tryon Palace is located at 529 S. Front Street in New Bern, North Carolina.
