    NEW BERN, NC --- This year’s festivities offer visitors an opportunity to experience the holiday traditions that make the Tryon Palace holiday celebrations so very special. The 2008 holiday season celebration begins the Friday after Thanksgiving, and runs through the end of December. more


  • “THE JONKONNU PARADE: AN ARTICULATION OF ESCAPE AND RENEWAL IN NORTH CAROLINA”
    Presented by: Dr. Jermaine Archer
    Thursday, November 20 – 7 p.m. – Free!
    Tryon Palace Visitor Center Auditorium The men, women and children who participated in the nineteenth-century North Carolina Jonkonnu slave parade engaged in a brief respite from the racial social hierarchy. The revelers would often approach the master’s residence seeking monetary compensation for their work. Central features of the festival included circular dance, drums and other percussion instruments, improvisational song, brightly colored garb, a wand to keep onlookers at a distance, and masks which sometimes took the form of houseboats or canoes. more

    NEW BERN, NC --- Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens is pleased to announce a gardener’s delight with two free lectures, November 7 and 8, with guest speakers Dick and Judith Tyler of Pine Knott Farms fame. On Friday, November 7 at 7 p.m. the Tyler’s present, “The Winter Garden” and on Saturday morning, at 10 a.m. “Helleborus Species for American Gardens” will be the focus of their second lecture. Both free lectures have been made possible by a grant from the Harold H. Bate Foundation and all gardeners and ‘would be’ gardeners are invited. more

Karen Blum, Assistant Attorney General with the North Carolina Department of Justice, represented NC in the recovery of the document, will trace its dramatic journey from 1787 to 2008. more

    (NEW BERN, NC) --- On the afternoon of Labor Day September 1, at 4:00 p.m. the New Bern Academy Museum will be the site of an authentic reenactment of a famous duel between two of New Bern’s sons, Richard Dobbs Spaight and John Stanly. The original duel took place in New Bern on September 5, 1802, after Spaight described Stanly, his successor in Congress, as "both a liar and a scoundrel." more

    NEW BERN, NC (April 16, 2008) --- Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens has again achieved accreditation by the American Association of Museums (AAM), the highest national recognition for a museum. Accreditation signifies excellence to the museum community, to governments, funders, outside agencies, and to the museum-going public. Tryon Palace was initially accredited in 1989.  All museums must undergo a re-accreditation review at least every ten years to maintain accredited status. more

The Corps will ‘step off’ when the parade begins at 11 a.m. The route takes them down Broad Street to George Street, ending at the Senior Services Center at Cypress and George Street, just down from the Police Department towards National Avenue.
